England has enlisted Manchester City psychologist David Young ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Young, who contributed to England’s 2019 World Cup victory, will join the team on a temporary basis for the upcoming tournament, according to a UK media outlet.
David Young’s previous tenure with the England cricket team spanned from 2016 to 2020, a period during which the team secured the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019. Following this success, he joined Manchester City. Young will rejoin the England cricket team support staff for the T20I series against Pakistan before the T20 World Cup 2024.
England coach Matthew Mott has expressed confidence that Young’s involvement will enhance team communication. “He’s previously been with the team and he’s already been a great ally in messages back to me, making sure my messages are clear,” Mott stated.
England, winners of the T20 World Cup in 2022, faced significant criticism for their performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year. In light of this, Mott emphasized the need for a new approach. “When you’ve had the kick in the pants like we’ve had, you can’t just go ‘business as usual’. You have to redefine how you go as a team,” Mott explained.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in the United States and West Indies, starting on June 2. Prior to the World Cup, England and Pakistan will play a four-match T20I series from May 22 to May 30. The first match, scheduled for May 22, was washed out, and the second game is set for May 25.
David Young’s latest role was with Manchester City, where he contributed to their recent success in securing their fourth consecutive Premier League title. His expertise is expected to be a valuable asset for England as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024.
