Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be, on track for a term in power but Modi’s Hopes for landslide fading. The early election results suggest that the expected overwhelming victory might not come to fruition.
As the vote counting progresses the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading in close to 300 seats while the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) is ahead in over 200 seats. The initial trends have caused ripples in the markets with stocks taking a nosedive and the rupee depreciating sharply against the dollar.
Market optimism had surged on Monday following exit polls projecting a win for Modi. The actual results are indicating a more modest triumph for the BJP. Modis aspirations for a landslide victory are waning as the opposition coalition, spearheaded by Rahul Gandhis Congress Party, outperformed expectations in states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have all registered advancements bolstering the oppositions performance. Modis hopes for a victory were further dimmed as the opposition coalition surged ahead in key states including Uttar Pradesh—a state often seen as an indicator, for wider electoral outcomes.
Although it is predicted that the BJP will lead the government their inability to achieve a two thirds majority, in parliament may restrict their capacity to enact constitutional modifications. This situation could greatly impact Modis Hindu objectives and economic policies.
Modi’s Hopes for landslide fading which were built on the expectation of a strong majority, but the actual results are showing a more nuanced picture.
The election results have also highlighted the decline of the BJP’s dominance in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state. The opposition alliance is leading the BJP’s alliance in the state, which has 80 seats and is considered a barometer for the rest of the country.
As the counting continues, it remains to be seen whether Modi’s BJP will be able to maintain its majority or if the opposition will continue to make gains. One thing is certain, however: the Indian political landscape will be significantly altered by these results, and the implications will be far-reaching.
